Is It Cake? Sandwich Cake

Print Recipe

Prep Time: 60 minutes

Servings: 8

Inspired by the Netflix show Is It Cake?, the "Is It Cake? Sandwich Cake" is a Swedish Smörgåstårta that tricks the eye with its cake-like appearance. However, when sliced, it reveals delicious layers of ham, turkey, cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato, making it a fun and unexpected April Fool’s Day dinner.

Directions

Step 1

In a food processor, stand mixer (or with an electric hand mixer), beat the cream cheese, sour cream and ranch seasoning until smooth. Put 1/5 cup of the mixture into a piping bag with a star tip and refrigerate until 1/2 hour before use (optional for decorating). Put 1/4 cup of the mixture aside for the optional roasted pepper spread.

Step 2

(Optional) Add the roasted red pepper pieces to the food processor with the remaining 1/4 cup of the cream cheese mixture to create a roasted pepper spread. Puree until smooth.

Step 3

Use a serrated knife to trim the edges of the sourdough bread to create a cylinder. Next, cut the sourdough across the top to create a flat surface. Finally, cut the radius twice to create 3 slices.

Step 4

Choose a cake stand or serving platter. Cut parchment paper to fit underneath the outside edges of your sourdough bread, see video. This is optional but will keep the cake stand clean after icing your sandwich cake.

Step 5

Place the bottom sourdough round on the cake stand. Spread the optional red pepper mixture OR mayo onto the top of the bread, keeping away from the edges of the bread. Top with the Cheddar, ham, turkey, and 1/4 cup shredded lettuce.

Step 6

Take the second layer of sourdough bread and spread 1 Tbsp red pepper mixture OR 1 Tbsp mayo on one side and place on top of the first layer, spread sided down over lettuce.

Step 7

Add 2 Tbsp mayonnaise to the second sourdough layer, keeping away from the edges of bread. Add bacon, tomato and 1/4 cup shredded lettuce.

Step 8

Place the top layer of sourdough bread over the lettuce. Set aside .5 cup of cream cheese mixture and refrigerate until 1/2 hour before ready to use. Use an offset spatula to spread the remaining cream cheese mixture to the top and sides of the sandwich cake evenly. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours.

Step 9

Remove from refrigerator and remove parchment paper. Carefully spread the remaining cream cheese mixture along the sides and top to create a smooth surface. Use the piping bag to decorate the bottom edge of the cake (optional).

Step 10

Decorate your sandwich cake with sliced radishes, cucumbers, and chives.

Step 11

Serve chilled or at room temperature (eat or refrigerate within 2 hours at room temperature).

Cook's Notes

For the best results, consider using a mandolin to thinly slice vegetables for optional decorating and a piping bag with a star tip to add decorative touches. A serrated knife is essential for cutting sourdough bread cleanly, and a cake stand helps achieve the full "cake" effect when serving.
